How to choose architectural model makers in Dubai

1. Ask to see finished models, not renders

Photographs of completed physical models tell you far more than digital images. Look at the crispness of edges, how glazing is treated, whether landscaping is convincing at scale, and how clean the base and the case detailing are. Ask which parts were hand-crafted and which were 3D printed or laser cut.

2. Agree the scale before anything else

Scale drives cost, size and the level of detail that is physically possible. A single tower is often built at 1:50 or 1:100, where floor lines, balconies and mullions read clearly. A resort or district masterplan usually sits around 1:500, where the story is massing, landscape and circulation rather than individual windows.

• 1:50 — one building, maximum facade and interior detail
• 1:100 — a tower with clear floor and balcony articulation
• 1:200 to 1:300 — a cluster or plot with surrounding context
• 1:500 and smaller — masterplans, resorts, whole districts

3. Check the materials the workshop actually uses

Different materials do different jobs, and a good workshop will explain the mix rather than default to one. Acrylic and Plexiglas give clear glazing and modern facades; PVC and styrene sheet cut sharply for white walls; wood such as balsa and basswood suits fine structural framing; foam and polystyrene shape terrain; ABS and polyamide suit 3D-printed and vacuum-formed components; and metals like aluminium, brass and copper carry high-end structural or decorative detail.

4. Confirm lighting and interactivity early

LED lighting inside a model changes both its cost and its wiring, so it cannot be added neatly at the end. If you want zone lighting, touch controls or a screen linked to the model, say so at briefing stage so the base and internal routing are designed for it.

5. Plan for transport, exhibitions and repair

Models built for Cityscape and similar UAE exhibitions are moved, installed and dismantled repeatedly. Ask how the model splits for transport, whether a flight case or acrylic cover is included, and who handles on-site installation and touch-up after the event.
